What to do when you’re getting crowns and bridges
Between the appointments until the insertion of the final work, your teeth are protected with temporary crowns or bridges. These are made of plastic and are therefore less stable and can be removed relatively easily. For this reason, please observe the following points:
- Don’t chew or bite hard food (e.g. nuts).
- Don’t eat particularly sticky foods (e.g. caramel sweets, chewy sweets etc.).
- Don’t pull the dental floss out upwards (towards the occlusal surface), but to the side. If several temporary restorations are placed next to each other, you can’t clean with dental floss because the temporary crowns are connected to each other. Please use SuperFloss or interdental brushes here.
If the temporary restoration should fall out or break anyway, please try to keep it as much as possible so that it can be repaired and reused if necessary.
Please come back to our practice as soon as possible, because without a temporary restoration your teeth can become infected and can easily shift, so that the final restoration may no longer fit.
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.

What to do after mini-implant treatment
To achieve complication-free and painless healing, please observe the following:
- After a local anaesthetic and also due to the stress of the surgical procedure, your ability to react — especially when actively participating in road traffic — may be reduced for several hours. For this reason it’s best to arrange for someone to drive you home.
- Until the anaesthesia subsides please don’t eat or drink anything hot because of the risk of injury.
- If you remove the prosthesis, please make sure that it is not outside the oral cavity for more than 5 minutes. In the first few days, re-insertion can be a little painful. Nevertheless, the prosthesis must be inserted. If you received instructions to the contrary during the operation, please follow them.
- To reduce swelling, more frequent wet-cold compresses for two days are helpful. However, please don’t use ice packs in direct skin contact, but only wrapped in a cloth. If you need to rest at home, please place a thick pillow under your head and avoid lying flat.
- Please refrain from smoking for several days. This will reduce the risk of wound healing problems. In the first few days you should not go to the sauna.
- After the treatment, you might not be able to open your mouth properly. However, if you notice that your jaw is very tight, that there is a persistent loss of sensation and/or increasing pain, please come to us immediately.
- In the first week after the treatment you should avoid physical exertion. Brush your implants, teeth and denture(s) regularly (3 times a day). Please clean the implants from all sides like a natural tooth. You can use electric toothbrushes and mouth showers.
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.
We hope you have a speedy recovery!

What to do after periodontal surgery with bone augmentation material
To achieve a complication-free and painless healing, please observe the following:
- Please don’t eat or drink anything as long as the numbness lasts, otherwise you could injure yourself.
- Don’t drive a car in the first few hours after the procedure, as your ability to drive may be limited.
- If you experience pain, please take the prescribed medication in the prescribed quantity.
- Apply cooling packs for two days to allow the swelling and pain to subside more quickly. For example, you can put a cold pack in a cloth and hold it against your cheek.
- Don’t drink alcohol, green tea, black tea or coffee for two days, as this can cause bleeding due to high blood pressure. For this reason you should also avoid physical exertion for three days.
- Please don’t smoke for three weeks, otherwise the bone regeneration material can’t heal!
- For one month, rinse out your mouth with chlorhexidine digluconate solution 0.1% for two minutes in the morning and in the evening after brushing your teeth.
- Don’t brush your teeth in the wound area for three weeks — either with a toothbrush or with dental floss. After three weeks, please only clean the wound area gently with a special soft toothbrush for another three weeks. Only after six weeks can you clean the wound area normally again with your usual toothbrush and floss.
- Please don’t chew anything solid on the wound side for three weeks.
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.

What to do after your teeth are bleached
To get the best effect, please observe the following:
Sometimes teeth become sensitive as a result of bleaching. This effect usually disappears after a few days. To keep this side effect as low as possible, we seal your teeth directly after the bleaching process. In addition, you can re-flouridate your teeth at home with a fluoride gel (e.g. Elmex jelly).
Please avoid foods containing citric acid, as this can increase sensitivity.
Sometimes a burning sensation appears on the gums or the rest of the oral mucosa. These areas could also be whitish or reddish in colour. The symptoms should disappear after three days at the latest. Should they last longer, please come to our practice for a check-up.
In the first three days, please avoid foods that stain, such as coffee, black tea, red wine, ketchup, etc., as the teeth become discoloured particularly easily during this phase. For the same reason, please also refrain from smoking in the first three days.
Regular consumption of staining foods and tobacco smoke will make your teeth darker again more quickly.
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.
To keep your teeth bright and shiny as long as possible, we recommend regular professional tooth cleaning at least twice a year.

What to do when having a tooth accident
If a tooth breaks or breaks off completely including the root, please note the following:
Act quickly!
- If the root of the tooth is still in the jaw and is not wobbling, please come to our practice as soon as possible. It’s best to clarify in advance by telephone how urgent the visit is. If the broken piece is still there, please bring it with you.
- If the root of the tooth is still stuck in the jaw but is visibly wobbling and possibly bleeding, please come to our practice immediately. Outside our opening hours, please contact the emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011).
- If the root of the tooth has broken out of the jaw, then the matter is urgent. You should come to our practice for treatment within a maximum of 30 minutes or contact the emergency service outside our opening hours (Tel. 01805 — 607 011).
- If the tooth is still attached to the gum, then take hold of the crown (never at the root) and push it back into the tooth socket.
- If the tooth is no longer hanging on the gums, it should ideally be transported in a tooth rescue box with saline solution (e.g. Dentosafe), which is available from the pharmacy. If this is not available, the lesser alternative is UHT milk (not normal milk). If this is also not available, you should transport the tooth in your mouth without biting on it or better wrap it in cling film.
- Never let the tooth dry out and never touch the root, only the crown. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it for 1–2 seconds under running water.
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.

What to do after a tooth extraction or an operation
To ensure that the healing process is as complication-free and painless as possible, please observe the following:
- After a local anaesthetic and also due to the stress of the surgical procedure, your ability to react — especially when actively driving in road traffic — may be reduced for several hours. It is therefore best to arrange for someone to drive you home.
- Until the numbness subsides, please don’t eat or drink anything hot because of the risk of injury.
- To protect the wound and for undisturbed blood coagulation, please bite on the inserted swab for about 30 minutes. Then pull it off carefully to the side. If a pressure bandage is applied, please follow our special recommendations. If, contrary to expectations, there is a post-bleeding, bite again for half an hour on a rolled up, clean, moistened cloth handkerchief. In the event of more severe bleeding that won’t stop, please come back to our practice or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011).
- To reduce swelling, frequent wet-cold compresses for two days are helpful. However, please do not use ice packs in direct skin contact, but only wrapped in a cloth. If you want to rest at home, please place a thick pillow under your head and avoid lying flat.
- After the anaesthetic has worn off, you should eat soft, not too hot food for the next few days and refrain from using milk products and soups that form deposits. When chewing, if possible avoid the treated side for a week. For the next two days you shouldn’t drink alcohol, coffee, cola or black or green tea. Don’t smoke for several days. This will reduce the risk of post-bleeding and wound healing disorders. In the first few days you shouldn’t go to the sauna.
- After the treatment, you might not be able to open your mouth properly. However, if you notice that your jaw is very tight, that there is a persistent loss of sensation and/or increasing pain, please come to us immediately.
- In the first week after the treatment you should avoid physical exertion. Brush your teeth regularly (3 times a day) and also brush any dentures you may have. However, please avoid the surgical area and avoid rinsing for three days. It is possible to use electric toothbrushes outside the surgical area, but oral showers should not be used until the healing process is complete.
- If you have been prescribed medication, please follow the exact instructions for use and the maximum dose. Don’t take any additional medication without consulting us!
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.
We wish you a speedy recovery!

What to do with an opened maxillary cavity
If a connection to the oral cavity has been created during tooth removal, implant surgery or maxillary sinus surgery, please observe the following:
- Please take the prescribed antibiotic in the recommended manner from the first day until the pack is empty. It will last for about a week.
- Three times a day, apply a few drops of the prescribed nasal drops to the respective nostril on the side of which the maxillary sinus is opened.
- Don’t blow your nose for at least a week. If your nose runs, suck the secretion back into your throat. Under no circumstances should there be excess pressure in the nose!
- If you have to sneeze, please don’t hold your nose closed!
- Please don’t exert pressure on the wound. Don’t chew on the corresponding side for at least one week, be very careful when brushing your teeth and don’t touch the wound with your tongue.
- Cool well for two days to allow the swelling and pain to subside more quickly. You can, for example, put a cold pack for the cool bag in a cloth and hold it against your cheek.
- Don’t drink alcohol, green tea, black tea or coffee for two days, as this can cause bleeding due to high blood pressure.
- Avoid physical exertion for three days, otherwise post-bleeding may occur.
- Please don’t smoke for at least three days, as this can lead to extremely painful inflammations and impaired wound healing!
If something seems unusual to you, please come to our practice immediately or contact the dental emergency service (Tel. 01805 — 607 011) outside our opening hours.
